Action Item: First Step Act

ACTION ITEM: Call your Senators and your MOC

FOCUS: S.3649 – First Step Act

GOAL: Pass the bipartisan Criminal Justice Reform Bill

DEADLINE: Friday, Dec. 22, 2018

WHAT’S HAPPENING:

Many groups have been working on a bipartisan criminal justice overhaul bill and it just passed the Senate!  It addresses many things including prohibiting shackling pregnant inmates, prohibiting almost all solitary confinement for juveniles, allows petitions to re-evaluate sentencing disparities between crack and powder cocaine, changes to four federal sentencing laws, and a focus on re-entry job training and reducing recidivism (people committing crimes after a release and returning to prison).  Next it goes to the House.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

3 quick calls!  Say thank you to Senators Warren and Markey for voting yes.  Call your current Congressperson to say you expect a swift yes vote in the House.
